Matting a picture and framing it is easy. The first step to matting a picture and framing it is to buy your mats and frames. With our wide selection of mats and frames, you can easily create the right display for your art.

If conservation framing is your priority, use an archival mat for matting the picture, and framing it behind UV acrylic. Matting a picture and framing it in this way will offer the utmost in protection for your artwork. Also, use an archival mount for mounting a picture and framing it. When matting and mounting an original picture and framing it, always use archival adhesives. We sell a variety of archival adhesives, such as linen tape and conservation paper tape. These are excellent choices for assembling your picture and framing.

In addition to archival matting and framing options, Documounts also carries pH neutral and economy mats for matting an open edition picture and framing it. For instance, if you are matting a poster, an open edition print, or any type of open edition picture and framing it, then you can use a pH neutral mat.

When you sell a picture and framing together at an art fair, it is far more appealing to customers than an unframed picture. Matting the picture and framing it saves the buyer the time and effort from having to do it themselves. If you are an artist or a photographer who sells a lot of artwork at galleries and art fairs, then you’ll particularly enjoy the bulk discounts you’ll receive when you buy a lot of mats and frames from Documounts.

UV Plexiglass is an ideal glazing option when framing photographs or works of art. UV Plexiglass will protect your artwork against damage from both natural and artificial UV rays by filtering out 98% of the harmful UV rays. Artwork that is not protected by UV Plexiglass will be susceptible to UV damage such as yellowing, fading, and the premature aging of paper, mat boards, fabric and photographs.

UV Plexiglass is a better glazing solution than real glass, for a number of reasons. To begin with, real glass is far heavier than UV Plexiglass, which makes it much more difficult and costly to ship and transport. Additionally, real glass is easily prone to breakage and shattering. Artwork that is framed with real glass instead of UV Plexiglass is highly susceptible to breaking while in transit and even while in storage if something bumps against it. You will never have this problem if you frame your artwork with UV Plexiglass. UV Plexiglass is lightweight and sturdy. It will never shatter or cause damage to your artwork in a way that real glass can. This also makes it an ideal option when hanging framed artwork in a child’s room.

The type of UV Plexiglass that we sell at Documounts is called Acrylite Acrylic, although some people refer to it as UV Plexiglass. We have found that Acrylite Acrylic is the best brand of acrylic glazing in the business. The sheets of UV Plexiglass are 1/8” thick. You can buy them custom cut from Documounts in any size that you need up to 28” x 36”, which is the maximum size for shipping. When you buy 12 or more pieces of UV Plexiglass cut to the same size, you’ll receive a volume discount!

Documounts also sells all of the other supplies that you’ll need to frame your artwork, such as mat board, mount boards, frame mouldings, and other matting and framing supplies.

Archival tape is a necessary supply when matting and mounting original works of art or limited edition reproductions. When conservation framing is a priority, then you always want to use archival materials, such as archival mats, archival mount boards, and archival tape. Non-archival tape will damage your artwork in the long run by causing yellowing and staining, facilitating the aging process of the artwork. Because tape will come into direct contact with your artwork, be sure to use an archival tape.

Documounts sells several different types of archival tape and mounting options:

Filmoplast White Linen Mounting Archival Tape – This is a strong, self-adhesive white cloth archival tape.

ASAP 1” Conservation Paper Tape – This self-adhesive archival paper tape is a strong product yet it has a thinner tape thickness than other tapes.

3L Mounting Corners – These adhesives are excellent when you don’t want adhesives to be in direct contact with your artwork. Slide your artwork into the mounting corners and apply the sticky side to the mount board. Available in small, medium and large.

Lineco See-Thru Mounting Strips – If you don’t want adhesives to touch your artwork directly, then use this archival tape mounts. These mounting strips have a sticky lower half and a clear, adhesive-free upper half. The artwork rests inside the upper half of the tape while the lower half sticks to the mount board.

The type of archival tape that is best for you will depend on what you are matting and mounting. If you are matting artwork that has a blank border around all the edges, then you can use an archival tape such as Linen Mounting Archival Tape or Paper Archival Tape. If you are mounting rare photographs, then you might want to use archival tapes that don’t touch the surface of the photo, such as mounting corners or mounting strips.

In addition to archival tape, Documounts also sells mats, mount boards, frames, glazing, and many other supplies that you’ll need to display your artwork.

UV acrylic sheets are the best glazing option when you are framing important or valuable artwork that you would like to preserve for generations to come. When conservation framing is a priority, UV acrylic glazing provides maximum protection for your artwork.

UV rays from both natural and artificial light cause damage to artwork such as fading and yellowing, as well as advancing the aging process of mat boards, paper, fabric and photographs. UV acrylic protects your artwork by filtering out 98% of these UV rays.

Documounts carries two types of UV acrylic glazing: regular UV acrylic glazing and non-glare UV acrylic glazing. The difference is that the non-glare UV acrylic has a matte finish which minimizes reflections and reduces glare. This can make it easier to view and enjoy the artwork.

When it comes to glazing, UV acrylic sheets are superior to glass for a number of reasons. For one thing, glass is fragile and therefore highly susceptible to breaking. This makes it dangerous for shipping and transporting. Plus, if the glass shatters, it may damage the artwork. On the other hand, UV acrylic sheets are impact resistant. They will never shatter or break. Because they are lightweight, they are excellent for shipping and transporting artwork.

The brand of UV acrylic sheets that we carry is called Acrylite Acrylic, which we find to be the leading brand in the business. These UV acrylic sheets are 1/8” thick. We can custom cut UV acrylic glazing up to 28” x 36”, which is the maximum size for shipping. When you buy 12 or more pieces of the same size UV acrylic glazing, you’ll receive a discount!

In addition to UV acrylic, you can also find most of the other supplies you’ll need for framing your artwork at Documounts. We also carry a select line of mats, mounting boards, frames, and other supplies such as adhesives and hanging wire.

The archival Crescent matboard is called Crescent Ragmat. Crescent Ragmat is made from 100% cotton rag, so it is naturally acid and lignin free. This type of Crescent matboard is ideal for one-of-a-kind works of art and limited edition reproductions. The archival Crescent matboard is available in 6 different varieties of white, all with a white core.

The pH neutral Crescent matboard is called Crescent Papermat. Crescent Papermat is made from paper, which needed to be chemically treated in order to become temporarily acid-free. Over time, the protective buffering of the paper Crescent matboard will wear off, and the mat will become acidic again. Therefore, paper Crescent matboard is suitable for matting open edition reproductions, such as prints, photographs and posters. The pH neutral Crescent matboard is available in a wide variety of colors in bright white core, off-white core, and black core.

Documounts specializes in selling custom cut matboard. If you need to buy a lot of custom cut Crescent matboard, you will enjoy the deep discounts that you’ll receive when you buy a large quantity of Crescent matboard from Documounts. You only need to buy 4 of the same custom cut Crescent matboard to receive a bulk discount. The discount gets even deeper the more that you buy! For example, if you buy one 8×0 Papermat Crescent matboard, it will cost $2.39. If you buy four of them, they will cost $2.08 each. If you buy sixteen of them, they will cost only 88 cents each. If you need to buy 1000 Papermat Crescent matboards to get ready for an upcoming season of art festivals, then they will only cost 62 cents each!

Documounts also sells all of the essential supplies that you will need to mat, mount and frame your artwork. We sell mountboard, frames, archival adhesives, clear bags, and lots of other matting and framing supplies.

Crescent mat boards are an excellent matting option. Crescent mat boards are available in both archival quality and pH neutral quality. If you’re not sure whether you need an archival mat or a pH neutral mat, consider the following questions:

Are you matting original, one-of-a-kind works of art?

Are you matting signed and numbered hand-pulled prints?

Are you matting limited edition reproductions (such as giclees or photographs)?

If you answer yes to any of the above questions, then you should use archival Crescent mat boards, such as Crescent RagMat.

If you are not matting anything that fits into the above categories, you might choose to mat with pH neutral Crescent mat boards, such as Crescent Papermat. The paper Crescent mat boards are ideal for open edition reproductions, such as giclees, photographs or posters.

The main difference between these two types of Crescent mat boards is the quality. Ragmat Crescent mat boards are made from 100% cotton rag, while Papermat Crescent mat boards are made from paper. The cotton rag mats are naturally acid and lignin free, while the paper mats are chemically treated to become temporarily acid-free. This means that Ragmat Crescent mat boards will protect and preserve your artwork for generations to come, while Papermat Crescent mat boards will once again become acidic over time, contributing to the deterioration of your artwork.

Cotton mats are made from 100% cotton rag, which means that they are naturally acid and lignin free. These cotton mats will protect your artwork from chemical deterioration such as yellowing and staining. Cotton mats aid in the preservation of your artwork, making cotton mats the ideal matting solution for conservation framing.

Documounts sells two different brands of cotton mats: Bainbridge Alpharag and Crescent Ragmats. Both of these cotton mats are archival-quality mats that will protect, preserve and present your artwork in style.

Bainbridge Alpharag cotton mats are available in 4 ply and 8 ply. The 8 ply cotton mats are twice as thick as the 4 ply mats, which creates a deeper bevel. The 8 ply rag mats showcase your artwork in a more sophisticated, sculptural presentation. Bainbridge Alpharag mats are available in a variety of colors. Because Bainbridge Alpharag mats are solid core, the color of the bevel is the same color as the front of the mat board.

Crescent Ragmats are available in 4 ply, in 6 different varieties of white. These cotton mats are white core.

If you need to order a large quantity of cotton mats to get ready for your upcoming art festivals or gallery shows, then you will enjoy the bulk discounts that you will receive at Documounts when you buy 4 or more of the same custom cut cotton mats. The more cotton mats that you buy, the more you save!

Documounts also sells all of the other supplies that you will need for conservation framing, such as archival tapes and archival mount boards. We also sell frames, hanging wire, and many other essential matting and framing supplies!

The black mounting board that we sell at Documounts is archival. This means that it will protect and preserve your artwork for generations. The black mounting board is designed to neutralize environmental pollutants and protect your artwork against chemical damage, such as yellowing, staining or spotting.

For these reasons, black mounting board is the top-quality mounting choice when you need to mat original works of art, limited edition reproductions, or important paper memorabilia that you would like to preserve for future generations.

In addition to black mounting board, Documounts also sells white mounting board. When is black mounting board better than white mounting board? You should use a black mounting board if any of the following applies:

- You need a black surface background for the presentation of your art.

- You are matting with a black core mat board.

- You are mounting a newspaper clipping, and you want to minimize the amount of reverse text that shows through the newspaper.
