Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

When mounting your artwork, there are many options to choose from.  One of the most popular options for mounting artwork is foam core mount board.  Documounts offers several options of foam core mount board for you to consider.  Our foam core mount board options include:

  • Standard Foam Core Mount Board. Available in 1/8” and 3/16” thickness, this type of foam core mount board is stiff, sturdy and lightweight.  Both thicknesses are bright white, clay coated and come with an extra smooth surface.  The 3/16” thickness of foam core mount board provides extra support and is therefore recommended for larger projects.  Do not use standard foam core mount board for archival mounting.  Click here to view our standard mount board options.

  • Adhesive Foam Core Mount Board. Our 3/16” thick adhesive foam core mount board is white with acid-free adhesive.  This type of foam core mount board is ideal for mounting posters, photos and other inexpensive prints.  While adhesive foam core mount board can be difficult to work with, art can be repositioned prior to a permanent bond being activated by applying firm pressure to the artwork.  Click here to view our adhesive mount board options.

  • Archival Quality Foam Core Mount Board. We offer three options for archival quality foam core mount board.  Our white finish mount board is available in 1/8” and 3/16” thickness.  Both are made with MicroChamber technology that absorbs and neutralizes airborne pollutants and gasses.  MicroChamber technology provides the ultimate protection for your artwork.  This stiff, lightweight mount board has a matte finish.  We also offer archival quality foam core mount board in black.  This type of mount board features a black core and surface.  Black foam core mount board gives artists an excellent background for display pieces. Click here to view our archival quality foam core mount board options.

What You Need to Know When Using Adhesive Mounting Boards

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Adhesive mounting boards provide artists with a wonderful tool for giving rigidity or stiffness to media such as prints and photographs.  If you plan to mount your work on adhesive mounting boards, there are some important things to know.

One of the most important things to know about using adhesive mounting boards is that they are a permanent mounting option.  While your art can be moved for perfect positioning during the mounting process, once the adhesive is activated, the bonds between your artwork and the adhesive mounting boards are permanent.  This permanent bond means that adhesive mounting boards should not be used for archival quality framing.  For this reason, most artists rely on adhesive mounting boards only for small prints or photos.

If you are evaluating different types of adhesive mounting boards, you should be looking for a pH neutral board with acid-free adhesive.  As the leading source for framing and mounting supplies, Documounts carries the highest quality adhesive mounting boards available.  Our adhesive mounting boards come with a white surface, is pH neutral and has acid-free adhesive.

When positioning your artwork on adhesive mounting boards, it is important to watch out for bubbling.  We recommend that you use a press when adhering your artwork to adhesive mounting boards.  Using a press will ensure a smooth permanent bond between your work and the board itself.

When using adhesive mounting boards, many artists choose to frame their work with a picture mat the same size as the board.  By using a mat to frame the artwork, you will be able to easily position your photo or print so that the mat covers the edges of your artwork.  The mat will also adhere to the adhesive mounting boards for a clean finished look.

Archival Plexiglass Offers Many Benefits to Artists

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Why do artist choose archival plexiglass* over glass?  Displaying your artwork under glass presents a challenge when it is time to move or ship those pieces.  To avoid this problem, many artists choose to frame their work under archival plexiglass.  By choosing archival plexiglass, you are selecting a high quality, lightweight, shatter resistant material that will not harm your work.   Because archival plexiglass will not shatter during shipment, it  ensures your work will arrive safely.  For artists who travel between shows, archival plexiglass allows them the ability to easily transport their art without the added weight of glass.

One of the most important reasons to choose archival plexiglass is because it will protect your artwork from fading and aging.  Archival plexiglass protects your work from the damaging rays of the sun.  With our UV Resistant archival plexiglass, 98% of the sun’s harmful rays are filtered.  Our Non-Glare UV Resistant archival plexiglass adds the additional feature of an anti-reflective coating for easier viewing.

At Documounts, we offer four crystal clear acrylic options to satisfy your framing needs.  However, only the UV Resistant and Non-Glare UV Resistant options are considered to be archival quality plexiglass.  The archival plexiglass we carry is made by Arcylite Acrylic.  Our archival plexiglass is 1/8” of an inch in thickness.  It can be ordered in any size, but we can only ship acrylic up to 28”x36” in size.  All of our archival plexiglass comes coated with protective paper.  When you are ready to frame your work, simply remove the protective paper to reveal the crystal clear acrylic underneath.

Don’t forget that when you order your archival plexiglass from Documounts, you will receive a 5% discount for orders of 12 or more same sized pieces.  With our easy to use ordering system and quick delivery, you can begin framing your artwork under archival plexiglass in a matter of days.

Click here for more information and to order archival plexiglass.

* Please note:  While most people refer to acrylic as plexiglass, Plexiglas is actually a brand of acrylic.  At Documounts, we carry Arcylite Acrylic.  We believe that Arcylite Acrylic is the best, most clear acrylic available today.

When and How to Use Self Adhesive Mounting Board

Monday, October 19th, 2009

For artists just getting started selling their work, it can be difficult to know which products to use.  With the overwhelming selection of framing and mounting supplies the options can seem nearly endless.  Self adhesive mounting board is a popular option for artists who wish to mount and/or frame smaller works of art.  For those considering self adhesive mounting board, it is important to know when it should be used and how to best use it.

  • Self adhesive mounting board is best used with small pieces of art or photos, as well as open ended prints.
  • Because self adhesive mounting board is permanent, it is not archival quality. Do not use self adhesive mounting board for archival quality framing.
  • For best results, choose self adhesive mounting board that is pH neutral with acid free adhesive.
  • Self adhesive mounting board can be difficult to work with, so use with caution.

The self adhesive mounting board offered by Documounts is made by Crescent.  It has a pH neutral 4UB chipboard core, with an acid-free adhesive applied to the surface.   The self adhesive mounting board is 1/8” thick.  With a white mounting surface, the self adhesive mounting board we sell is the perfect backing for nearly any project.

When applying your artwork to self adhesive mounting board, it is important to note that it can be repositioned as long as a permanent bond has not been activated.  The permanent bond is activated by applying firm pressure to the self adhesive mounting board.  Click here for tips on how to best position your artwork to the self adhesive mounting board.
