Choosing the Right Picture Mount

Monday, December 14th, 2009

A picture mount is an essential part of displaying your work.  The picture mount provides a sturdy surface that will protect the artwork.  If you are an artist or a photographer and you sell your artwork at art festivals, then you definitely want to sell your work mounted on a picture mount.  The picture mount will protect the art from damage while it is on display in racks or bins.  Picture mounts are also essential if you are framing your art, because it serves as a solid, protective backing board.

Documounts sells a variety of picture mounts.  The best picture mount for you will depend on what you are mounting.  Here are some guidelines for choosing the best picture mount for your needs:

  • If you are mounting an original, one-of-a-kind work of art, a limited edition print, or a vintage photograph, then you should use an archival picture mount.  A museum-quality archival picture mount will help to protect the artwork from chemical deterioration.  Documounts carries 2 types of archival picture mounts: archival foam core and Bainbridge Artcare mounting board.
  • If you are mounting an open edition reproduction, such as a print or a photograph, then you can use a standard picture mount.  Standard mount boards are acceptable for non-archival mounting purposes.  Documounts carries standard quality, non-archival foam core and Bainbridge 2UB and 4UB chip board.
  • If you are mounting an inexpensive poster, print, or photograph, then you might consider using an adhesive picture mount.  However, you should only use an adhesive mount board if you are absolutely certain that you’ll never want to remove the picture from the mount board, because it is very difficult to remove a picture from adhesive mount board without damaging the picture.

Documounts offers bulk discounts when you buy picture mounts in large quantities.  You only need to buy 4 of the same custom cut picture mount to receive a discount.  When you buy more, the discount gets even bigger!  The discount gets bigger at each of the following amounts: 4, 8, 16, 48, 250, 1000 & 5000.

In addition to picture mounts, Documounts also sells adhesives, mat boards, frames, and many other matting and framing supplies!

Types of Mount Boards for Mounting Photos

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Mounting photos is easy and affordable when you buy your mount boards from Documounts!

We specialize in creating custom cut mount boards for mounting photos in nearly any size. Documounts sells three different types of mount board for mounting photos: archival, standard, and adhesive.

Archival mount board is the best choice when mounting photos that are unique, vintage, or part of a limited edition.  Archival mount board will protect your artwork against environmental pollutants and chemical deterioration.  Archival mount boards like foam core or Bainbridge Artcare mounting boards are ideal for mounting photos that you want to preserve for a lifetime.  Archival foam core is available in two thicknesses: 1/8” and 3/16”.  The 3/16” foam core is ideal for mounting photos that are large, because it is extra sturdy.

Standard mount board can be used when mounting photos that are part of an open edition.  Standard mount board is not archival, so mounting photos with standard mount board will not protect and preserve your photos the same way that archival mount board will.  Standard mount board includes foam core (1/8” thick and 3/16” thick), as well as 1/16” thick Bainbridge 2UB chip board and 3/32” thick Bainbridge 4UB chip board.

Adhesive mount board should only be used when mounting photos that are inexpensive.  Mounting photos onto adhesive mount board is permanent, so it will be difficult (if not impossible) to remove the photos without damaging the photo.  Mounting photos onto adhesive mount board is also more difficult than mounting photos onto regular mount board, so take that into consideration as well.

If you need lots of mount board for mounting photos to sell at art fairs, then you’ll enjoy the volume discounts you’ll receive when you buy 4 or more of the same custom cut mount boards from Documounts.  When you buy more, the prices get even lower!  The more you buy, the more you save.

Documounts also carries other supplies that you’ll need for mounting photos, matting photos, and framing photos!

Different Types of Mounting Foam Core

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Documounts sells a variety of mounting foam core to suit your mounting needs.  Ordering mounting foam core from Documounts is easy.  First, determine the quality of mounting foam core that you need.  This will depend on what you are mounting.

Archival mounting foam core

If you are mounting original artwork, limited edition prints, signed and numbered hand-pulled prints, or important or valuable paper memorabilia, then you should use archival mounting foam core.  Archival mounting foam core will both preserve your artwork by providing a steady support and also protect your artwork against chemical deterioration by neutralizing environmental pollutants.  If you need to mount something that you want to last for generations, then use our museum-quality archival mounting foam core.

Archival foam core is available in two thicknesses: 1/8” and 3/16”.  Both sizes are stiff yet lightweight.  The thicker archival foam core is ideal for mounting larger works of art.  Both sizes of archival core are available in white.  The 3/16” mounting foam core is also available in black.

Standard mounting foam core

If you are mounting open edition reproductions, such as giclees, photographs, or posters, then you can use our standard mounting foam core.  This foam core is not archival, so it will not protect and preserve your artwork like the archival foam core will.

Standard mounting foam core is available in two thicknesses: 1/8” and 3/16”.  Both sizes are available in white only.

Adhesive mounting foam core

Adhesive foam core is acid-free, but not archival.  Therefore it is suitable for permanently mounting inexpensive prints, photographs and posters.  One side of the adhesive mounting foam core is self-adhesive, so you can apply the artwork directly to the foam core without the need for extra adhesives.  The artwork will be permanently adhered to the board, but you will be able to reposition the artwork before the bond becomes permanent.

After choosing the quality of mounting foam core that best serves your purposes, choose the thickness that you will need, and then decide on the size of your mounting foam core.  Next, enter the quantity of mounting foam core that you need.

In addition to mounting foam core, Documounts also sells mat board, frames, glazing, and all of the other supplies that you will need to display your artwork!
