Archival mounting boards are ideal when you are mounting original, one-of-a-kind works of art on paper or limited edition reproductions (such as photographs or giclees).  Our archival mounting boards include Bainbridge Artcare foam core, available in thicknesses of 1/8” and 3/16”, as well as Bainbridge Alphamount Artcare 4 ply mounting boards, made from 100% alpha cellulose.

Standard mounting boards are non-archival.  They are available as both foam core and chip board.  The foam core boards are available in thicknesses of 1/8” and 3/16”.  The chip boards that we carry are the 2UB and 4UB Bainbridge mounting boards, which are 1/16” thick and 3/32” thick, respectively.  These mounting boards are ideal for mounting open edition reproductions that will be framed inside moulding that has a thin profile.

Adhesive mounting boards are also not archival.  They are best used for mounting inexpensive posters, prints and photographs.  Adhesive mounting boards are available as 1/16” thick mounting boards and 3/16” foam core.  One side of the adhesive mounting boards is coating with a sticky adhesive, so all you need to do is peel off the protective paper and then stick your artwork directly onto the sticky side of the mounting board.

When you buy a lot of custom cut mounting boards that are the same size and cut from the same board, then you will quality for a volume discount.  The volume discount on mounting boards kicks in when you buy just 4 of the same mounting boards.  The discount on mounting boards gets even bigger at each of the following amounts: 4, 8, 16, 48, 250, 1000 & 5000.  The more you buy, the more you save!

Documounts also sells the adhesives that you’ll need to mount your artwork onto the mounting boards.  Our selection of adhesives includes conservation paper tape, spray adhesive, linen mounting tape, mounting corners, and several others.  In addition to mounting boards and mounting supplies, we also sell mat boards, frames, glazing, and all of the other supplies that you’ll need to mat, mount and frame your artwork!

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Do you need black mounting board?  Documounts sells museum-quality black mounting board that is 3/16” thick.  This black mounting board is strong and sturdy, yet lightweight.  It is ideal for mounting larger works of art, because it will not bend or crease.

In addition to black mounting board, Documounts also sells white mounting board.  When is black mounting board better than white mounting board?  You should use a black mounting board if any of the following applies:

-          You need a black surface background for the presentation of your art.

-          You are mounting a newspaper clipping, and you want to minimize the amount of reverse text that shows through the newspaper.

Different Types of Art Board Mounting Options

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

The art board mounting that you use to mount your art will come into direct contact with your artwork, so it is very important to choose the right art board mounting for your needs.  Documounts carries 3 types of art board mounting: archival, standard and adhesive.  If you’re not sure which would be the ideal type of art board mounting for you to use, read through the following descriptions of each of the art board & mounting boards to decide which one is best for you.

Archival art board mounting is the top choice for mounting important and valuable works of art, such as originals or limited edition prints.  Archival art board mounting options include Bainbridge archival foam core and Bainbridge Artcare 4 ply mount board.

Standard art board mounting is ideal for mounting open edition prints, posters and photography.  This type of art board mounting is not archival.  Standard art board mounting is available as foam core and as chip board.

Adhesive art board mounting is also not archival.  It is a permanent art board mounting solution, so it should only be used for mounting inexpensive prints, posters, and photographs.  You do not need to buy separate adhesives when you buy adhesive mount board.

When you buy art board mounting from Documounts, you can choose nearly any size that you need, and we will expertly cut your art board mounting to fit your specifications.  Plus, when you buy 4 or more of the same custom cut art board mounting, you’ll receive a volume discount.  The discount gets even bigger when you buy even more.  The discount increases at each of the following amounts: 4, 8, 16, 48, 250, 1000 & 5000.

For the archival and standard art board mounting, you will also need to purchase an adhesive for mounting your artwork onto the board.  Documounts sells many different types of adhesives, such as linen mounting tape, mounting corners, conservation paper tape, and spray adhesive, as well as many others.  We also sell mat board, frames, glazing, and all of the framing supplies that you will need to display your artwork!

Why You Should Use Archival Foam Core to Mount Your Artwork

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Archival foam core is the ideal mounting option for protecting and preserving important or valuable works of art.  You should use archival foam core if you need to mount any of the following:

  • original, one-of-a-kind works of art on paper
  • limited edition reproductions, such as giclees or photographs
  • signed and numbered hand-pulled prints, such as etchings
  • any kind of important paper memorabilia that you want to last for future generations, such as newspaper clippings or certificates

Archival foam core is the museum-quality choice for mounting these types of artworks.  Archival foam core is made with MicroChamber technology that will protect your artwork against chemical damage and environmental pollutants.

Documounts sells Bainbridge archival foam core in two different thicknesses: 1/8” and 3/16”.  The thicker archival foam core is ideal for mounting larger works of art that need more support.  Both thicknesses of foam core are lightweight, yet sturdy.  They will not break or bend.  Both thicknesses of archival foam core are available for the same price!

The 1/8” archival foam core is available in white.  The 3/16” archival foam core is available in both white and black.  Black archival foam core is an excellent option when displaying newspaper clippings, because the print on the reverse side will not show through as much as it would if you mounted the newspaper clipping on white foam core.  Black archival foam core is also a good choice when using a black core mat.

If you need to buy a lot of archival foam core to prepare your artwork for an upcoming art show, then you will enjoy the volume discount you’ll receive when you buy a large quantity of archival foam core from Documounts!  The bulk discount begins when you buy just 4 or more of the same size archival foam core.  The pricing gets lower at the following increments: 4, 8, 16, 48, 250, 1000 & 5000.  This is perfect for artists who sell a lot of artwork at art festivals and art galleries!

In addition to archival foam core, Documounts also sells mats, frames, glazing, and various other supplies that you will need to mat, mount and frame your artwork.

Is Adhesive Mounting Board the Right Mounting Option for You?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Documounts sells custom cut adhesive mounting board that is expertly cut to nearly any size that you need.  We offer adhesive mounting board in two thicknesses: 1/16” thick mounting board and 3/16” thick foam core.  These pH neutral adhesive mounting boards are not archival, so they should only be used for mounting inexpensive prints, photos and posters.  If you want to mat original artwork, then you should use archival mounting board and not adhesive mounting board.

How do you know if adhesive mounting board is a good mounting solution for your needs? Adhesive mounting board has its pros and cons.  The convenient thing about mounting your artwork with adhesive mounting board is that you won’t need to buy any adhesives.  The tricky thing about mounting your artwork with adhesive mounting board is that if it’s not done correctly, there might be trapped air bubbles underneath the artwork, resulting in a warped appearance.  Also, since adhesive mounting board is a permanent mounting option, it will be very difficult to remove the artwork from the mounting board without damaging the artwork.  For this reason, you should only use adhesive mounting board if you are certain that you’ll never want to remove it from the adhesive mounting board.

If you need to buy a lot of adhesive mounting board, you will enjoy the bulk savings that you’ll receive when you buy just 4 or more of the same size adhesive mounting board from Documounts.  When you buy more than 4, the discount gets even bigger!  The more you buy, the more you save.  The discount on adhesive mounting board increases at each of the following amounts: 4, 8, 16, 48, 250, 1000 & 5000.

If you need mats, frames, glazing, or framing supplies, you’ll also find a wide selection of these at Documounts!

Mount Your Artwork onto Acid Free Backing

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Mounting your artwork on acid free backing is an important part of conservation framing.  If you want your artwork to last for generations, then using materials such as acid free backing are an essential part of protecting and preserving your artwork.

Documounts carries two types of acid free backing: Bainbridge foam core and Bainbridge Artcare mounting board.  These acid free backing boards are permanently acid free.

Our foam core acid free backing is available in 2 sizes: 1/8” thick and 3/16” thick.  The thicker foam core is ideal for mounting larger works of art.  Both of these sizes of foam core acid free backing are available for the same price.  Foam core is lightweight yet sturdy, so it will not bend, crease, or buckle.  The foam core acid free backing will protect your artwork by neutralizing environmental pollutants.  The 3/16” foam core is available in white, while the 1/8” foam core is available in both white and black. Black foam core is ideal when you are also using a mat that has a black core.

Bainbridge Artcare mounting board is an acid free backing that is made of 100% alpha cellulose.  This museum quality acid free backing is an ideal option when you want to use a paper mount board.

We can expertly custom cut your acid free backing to the exact size that you require.  Best of all – you will save money when you buy a lot of acid free backing.  If you buy 4 or more of the same sized acid free backing, you’ll receive a bulk discount.  When you buy more than that, the price for acid free backing gets even lower!

Documounts also sells all of the supplies that you will need to mount your artwork onto acid free backing.  There are several different archival mounting options, such as conservation paper tape, linen mounting tape, mount strips and mounting corners.  You can also buy mat board, frames, glazing, and other framing supplies at Documounts!

Mounting Your Artwork with Acid Free Foam Board

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Acid free foam board is an economical option for mounting your artwork and photographs.  Many artists and photographers mount their artwork onto acid free foam board when they are preparing for their next appearance at an art festival or gallery show.

How do you know which type of foam board to choose?

Foam board is available in two different qualities: archival and standard (some refer to this as “acid free”).  Foam boards that are listed as “archival” are naturally acid-free, so they will never become acidic in the future.  “Standard acid free foam boards”, on the other hand, are chemically treated to become pH neutral (or “acid free”).  Foam boards that are described as “acid free” but not “archival” will, over time, lose their protective buffering and contribute to the deterioration of the artwork.

Acid free foam board is the ideal choice for artists and photographers who are mounting low-cost prints and posters.  Acid free foam board should only be used when conservation and longevity of the artwork are not major concerns.  If you would like to mount original artwork and limited edition prints, you should preserve your artwork by mounting your pieces on archival quality foam board.

Documounts offers acid free foam board in two sizes: 1/8” and 3/16”.  Both of these acid free foam boards are stiff and sturdy.  Although they are lightweight, these acid free foam boards will not bend or buckle.  If you are mounting a large artwork, such as a poster, you should choose the 3/16” acid free foam board.  Both sizes of acid free foam board are offered in bright white.

To mount your artwork onto acid free foam board, you will need supplies such as Artist’s Tape (or other mounting tapes). Documounts offers all of the supplies that you will need to mount your artwork onto acid free foam board.

How to Use Adhesive Foam Core

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Bainbridge adhesive foam core is a convenient mounting option for photographs and works of art on paper. The difference between adhesive foam core and regular foam core is that one side of the adhesive foam core is coated with a sticky adhesive.  This sticky adhesive conveniently eliminates the need for tape. Adhesive foam core is lightweight, but it is sturdy and rigid.  This 3/16” thick foam core will not crack, bend or warp.

To mount your artwork onto adhesive foam core, start by peeling off the protective sheet, revealing the sticky side of the foam core.  Position your artwork gently in the center of the adhesive foam core.  Don’t press firmly until you feel confident that your artwork is centered just the way you want it. Your artwork can be repositioned as needed until it is perfect.  When you are ready, press firmly and evenly on the artwork to seal it to the adhesive foam core.  Lay your mat on top of the adhesive foam core and when it is centered correctly, press the mat board down firmly as well.

When should you use adhesive foam core to mount your artwork?  You should mount your artwork onto adhesive foam core when conservation is not an issue.  Adhesive foam core is pH neutral, but it is not archival.  This means that over time, the chemicals from the foam core will contribute to the yellowing and deteriorating of the artwork.

This means that if you want to mount one-of-a-kind artwork or limited edition prints, you should not use adhesive foam core.  If you are mounting open edition prints or posters, then adhesive foam core is a convenient, low-cost option.  The main benefit of adhesive foam core is that you can mount both your artwork and your mat directly onto the adhesive foam core without using tape.

Documounts sells adhesive foam core, mats, frames, and everything else you will need to mat, mount, and frame your artwork!

Mounting Your Artwork onto Bainbridge Mountboard

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Bainbridge mountboard is a museum-quality paper mountboard that can be used for mounting and backing matted prints.  Bainbridge mountboard is an archival solution to mounting and protecting your prints against potential damage.

How to mount your artwork onto Bainbridge mountboard

There are a few different ways to mount your artwork using Bainbridge mountboard.  Here is a step-by-step explanation of one of the easiest ways to mat and mount your fine art or photography:

  1. To mat and mount your fine art or photography on Bainbridge mountboard, start by measuring your image to determine the inner and outer size of your mat.  The size of your Bainbridge mountboard will equal the outer size of your mat.
  2. Next, place your mat board face down on a clean, flat surface. Place your Bainbridge mountboard face up right next to the mat board.
  3. Use an archival, acid-free tape (such as FrameTac or a linen mounting tape), to create a hinge that connects the mat board with the Bainbridge mountboard.  The hinge should allow you to open and close the two boards, similar to opening and closing a book.
  4. With the two boards lying side by side, place your artwork in the center of the Bainbridge mountboard and then close the mat board on top of the Bainbridge mountboard.
  5. You should see your artwork through the opening of the mat.  Carefully adjust the positioning of the artwork so that it is perfectly centered in the window.
  6. Gently lift the mat board and use Lineco See-Thru Mount Strips to mount the artwork to the Bainbridge mountboard.  Place the sticky side of the Mount Strips onto the Bainbridge mountboard, with the clear side over your artwork.  This way, there will be no adhesive on your artwork – your art will only be in contact with the Bainbridge mountboard and the clear archival Mount Strip.
  7. Once the artwork is well-positioned and the Mount Strips are in place, place a few strips of acid-free double-sided tape on the Bainbridge mountboard.  Close the mat on top of the Bainbridge mountboard and press firmly into place.

Bainbridge also has non-archival mounting boards available. You will find them listed under 2UB and 4UB in standard mounting board options.

Documounts conveniently carries all of your mounting and framing needs, such as mats, Bainbridge mountboard, acid-free tapes, and other mounting and framing supplies.

Mount, Display or Ship Your Artwork with Mounting Foamboard

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Getting your artwork ready to show, or better yet sell, often requires it to be mounted.  Mounting foamboard provides you with the versatility you need to quickly mount, and easily transport or ship your artwork.  Let’s examine some of the ways that mounting foamboard can be used.

One way to use mounting foamboard is to have your prints or photos adhered to the board.  You have two options when adhering artwork to mounting foamboard.  The first option is to purchase mounting foamboard with pre-applied adhesive.  This type of mounting foamboard is perfect for framing prints and photos, but is not archival quality.  At Documounts, we carry 3/16” self-adhesive mounting foamboard with a white surface and acid-free adhesive.  However, some artists find self-adhesive mounting foamboard difficult to use because of the strength of the adhesive.

The second option is to use spray adhesive to adhere your artwork to the mounting foamboard.  If you choose this route, you may select from either Standard or Archival quality mounting foamboard.  Both our Standard and Archival mounting foamboard comes in 1/8” and 3/16” thickness.  With the additional purchase of repositionable spray mount adhesive, your artwork can then be adhered to the mounting foamboard.

Many artists also use mounting foamboard to showcase their artwork for sale.  For artists who travel between shows, or consign their work to stores and galleries, placing their artwork against mounting foamboard, and protecting it in a clear bag, is the perfect way to merchandise their work.  We offer several kits to make merchandising your work easy and affordable.

When you purchase mounting foamboard from Documounts, your order is custom cut to your exact specifications.  Discounts for orders of same sized mounting foamboard begin with the purchase of just 4 pieces.  Providing artists with high quality, affordably priced options is what we do best at Documounts.  Click here to learn more about our mounting foamboard options, and to place your order.
