If you need to buy a mat and frame for your artwork, Documounts has a wide selection of mats and frames to suit your needs and your budget.

The mat and frame you choose for your art will be one of the final decisions that you make on the presentation of your art, so choose your mat and frame carefully.  The right mat and frame will showcase and accentuate your art while blending in with the décor of the room where the artwork is hung.

Artists and photographers who sell their artwork at art festivals and art galleries will want to choose a mat and frame that blends in well with a wide variety of decorating styles.  Here are some ideas about the possible mat and frame combination that you could get for your artwork:

  • Black and white photography is highlighted nicely in a contemporary mat and frame, such as a white mat with a black bevel inside a metal frame
  • Watercolor paintings look stunning in a colored mat and frame, where the color of the mat brings out the color in the painting.
  • Traditional landscape art is often right at home in an off-white mat and frame of dark wood or gold.
  • Modern abstract art on paper would work well in a double mat and frame that is black.

These are just a few mat and frame ideas that you can try for your art.

When you buy a mat and frame from Documounts, you will save when you buy in bulk.  You only need to order 4 of the same mat and 3 of the same readymade frame to begin receiving the bulk discount.  This is why Documounts is the ideal place for artists and photographers to buy a large quantity of mats and frames that they need for art shows.

Documounts also sells all of the mat and frame supplies that you will need to mat and frame your artwork!

Two Different Types of Crescent Mat Board

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Crescent mat board is a fine choice for matting your artwork and photography.  Documounts offers Crescent mat board in 2 different standards of quality: archival and pH neutral.

Crescent Ragmat is an archival quality Crescent mat board made entirely from cotton rag. This means that Crescent Ragmat is naturally acid-free.  This type of Crescent mat board is an ideal choice for conservation framing because the Crescent mat board will help protect and preserve your artwork.  If you want to mat one-of-a-kind artwork, limited edition prints, or valuable paper memorabilia, then Crescent Ragmat is the Crescent mat board that you should choose.  Crescent Ragmat is available in 6 different varieties of white, with a white core.

Crescent Papermat is a Crescent mat board that is pH neutral.  These Crescent mat boards were buffered to make them temporarily acid-free.  This means that they are not archival.  After a number of years, the protective buffering will wear off and the artwork will become vulnerable to chemical deterioration, such as acidic staining, yellowing, and fading.  Therefore, this type of Crescent mat board is suitable for open edition prints and photos, rather than valuable works of art.

Crescent Papermat is a 4 ply mat available with an off-white core, a black core, and a bright white core.  This Crescent mat board is available in a wide variety of colors – much more than the usual white, off-white and black, so you can really get creative by choosing a colored Crescent mat that accentuates the colors in your art.

When you buy 4 or more of the same Crescent mat, you will receive a bulk discount.  The discount gets deeper the more that you buy.  When you buy more, you save more!  This is ideal for artists and photographers who need a large amount of Crescent mat board to get ready for their upcoming art festivals and gallery shows.

In addition to Crescent mat board, Documounts also sells all of the other matting, mounting and framing supplies that you will need to display your artwork.

Discover the Different Types of Bainbridge Mats

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Bainbridge mats are an excellent choice for matting your artwork and photography.  Bainbridge mats cater to various levels of display and conservation needs, by offering a wide selection of both archival and pH neutral mats in a range of colors.

The Alphamat and Alpharag Bainbridge mats are suitable for conservation purposes of valuable works of art, while the Papermat Bainbridge mats are a more economical choice for matting inexpensive artworks and photographs.  Let’s look at all of these Bainbridge mats in more detail.

Archival Bainbridge mats

If you need to mat original, one-of-a-kind works of art on paper, then you should mat your work with Bainbridge Alphamat or Alpharag.  These are also ideal choices for matting limited edition prints and precious paper memorabilia.

Alpharag mats are the naturally acid free Bainbridge mats.  These mats are made from 100% cotton rag, which means they did not need to be chemically treated to become acid free.  These museum-quality Bainbridge mats are available in 4 ply solid core and 8 ply solid core.

Bainbridge Alphamats are alpha cellulose mats that have been treated to remove all acids.  These Bainbridge mats will protect and preserve your artwork from acidic deterioration.  Alphamats are available in 4 ply white core and 4 ply black core, in a range of over 150 colors.

Topmat Alphamats are also alpha cellulose Bainbridge mats that have been treated to remove all acids. Topmats are available in 6 ply white core and 6 ply black core.  These Bainbridge mats are 1.5 times thicker than the usual 4 ply mats.

pH Neutral Bainbridge mats

Papermat Bainbridge mats are ideal for matting open edition prints, posters and photographs.  These pH neutral mats are buffered to be temporarily acid free, but after several years the protective buffering will wear off and the artwork will be exposed to chemical deterioration such as yellowing and fading.  These Bainbridge mats are available in 4 ply mat off-white core and 4 ply mat black core.

You can save money when you buy Bainbridge mats in bulk.  You only need to purchase 4 of the same mat to start receiving the bulk discount.  You receive more of a discount the more you buy.  In addition to Bainbridge mats, Documounts also sells all of the essential supplies that you need to mat, mount and frame your artwork.

Mounting Your Artwork with Acid Free Foam Board

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Acid free foam board is an economical option for mounting your artwork and photographs.  Many artists and photographers mount their artwork onto acid free foam board when they are preparing for their next appearance at an art festival or gallery show.

How do you know which type of foam board to choose?

Foam board is available in two different qualities: archival and standard (some refer to this as “acid free”).  Foam boards that are listed as “archival” are naturally acid-free, so they will never become acidic in the future.  “Standard acid free foam boards”, on the other hand, are chemically treated to become pH neutral (or “acid free”).  Foam boards that are described as “acid free” but not “archival” will, over time, lose their protective buffering and contribute to the deterioration of the artwork.

Acid free foam board is the ideal choice for artists and photographers who are mounting low-cost prints and posters.  Acid free foam board should only be used when conservation and longevity of the artwork are not major concerns.  If you would like to mount original artwork and limited edition prints, you should preserve your artwork by mounting your pieces on archival quality foam board.

Documounts offers acid free foam board in two sizes: 1/8” and 3/16”.  Both of these acid free foam boards are stiff and sturdy.  Although they are lightweight, these acid free foam boards will not bend or buckle.  If you are mounting a large artwork, such as a poster, you should choose the 3/16” acid free foam board.  Both sizes of acid free foam board are offered in bright white.

To mount your artwork onto acid free foam board, you will need supplies such as Artist’s Tape (or other mounting tapes). Documounts offers all of the supplies that you will need to mount your artwork onto acid free foam board.

How to Use Adhesive Foam Core

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Bainbridge adhesive foam core is a convenient mounting option for photographs and works of art on paper. The difference between adhesive foam core and regular foam core is that one side of the adhesive foam core is coated with a sticky adhesive.  This sticky adhesive conveniently eliminates the need for tape. Adhesive foam core is lightweight, but it is sturdy and rigid.  This 3/16” thick foam core will not crack, bend or warp.

To mount your artwork onto adhesive foam core, start by peeling off the protective sheet, revealing the sticky side of the foam core.  Position your artwork gently in the center of the adhesive foam core.  Don’t press firmly until you feel confident that your artwork is centered just the way you want it. Your artwork can be repositioned as needed until it is perfect.  When you are ready, press firmly and evenly on the artwork to seal it to the adhesive foam core.  Lay your mat on top of the adhesive foam core and when it is centered correctly, press the mat board down firmly as well.

When should you use adhesive foam core to mount your artwork?  You should mount your artwork onto adhesive foam core when conservation is not an issue.  Adhesive foam core is pH neutral, but it is not archival.  This means that over time, the chemicals from the foam core will contribute to the yellowing and deteriorating of the artwork.

This means that if you want to mount one-of-a-kind artwork or limited edition prints, you should not use adhesive foam core.  If you are mounting open edition prints or posters, then adhesive foam core is a convenient, low-cost option.  The main benefit of adhesive foam core is that you can mount both your artwork and your mat directly onto the adhesive foam core without using tape.

Documounts sells adhesive foam core, mats, frames, and everything else you will need to mat, mount, and frame your artwork!
