All about Double Mats, Single Mats, Triple Mats

| A double mat is when two mats are layered on top of each other. The window of the top mat is cut larger so you see a bit of the bottom mat. The usual amount that is revealed is 1/4". Double mats look great. They add depth and richness to your presentation. | |

| Using a different color under a white top mat can be a great way to pull out a particular color in the image. A contrasting bottom colored mat can add some definition to the presentation, while still having the majority of the mat be white. | ![]() |
| The other option for a double mat is color on the top and bottom. This can be very successful, especially for colorful artwork like some watercolors or acrylics. The right combination can be great, but keep in mind that colored mats may not work as well for resale. If you don't want white, consider black. Black is the second most popular mat color. | ![]() |
| To order double mats on the website when you're in the Matboard section, change the layers you want on the mat builder from 1 to 2 (or 3 for a triple mat). You then need to choose what mat type and color you want for each layer. Use the tab Top and Bottom for this. | ![]() |
The amount you see of the bottom mat is called the setback. The standard setback is 1/4" and that's what you'll get for a double mat unless you request something different. When ordering double mats, the opening size you enter will be for the bottom mat. We'll figure the top mat opening based on the setback you choose. | ![]() |
